Corporate Legal Counsel Resume Template

A senior corporate legal counsel resume built from a real job posting: how to prove pre-litigation, contracts, leases and legal monitoring with numbers.

The candidate of this template is fictional: keep the structure, replace the content with yours.

This is the resume of an experienced corporate legal counsel applying to a public job posting in Cameroon: a Master's in private or business law, five to eight years of experience, and a company to protect on commercial, tax and employment matters. The candidate is fictional: keep the structure and the way each line is written, then replace the content with your own background. Below you'll find the words in the posting that matter, a resume line for each one, and a template ready to download as PDF or Word.

For this kind of role, nearly every applicant has the Master's degree and the years required. What sets them apart is proof: what you settled, drafted or prevented for a company, with a number.

What the recruiter is really looking for

A lawyer who protects the business and talks to management, not a resume that reads like a thesis. Use the words from the posting and back each one up.

Managing pre-litigation and litigation

The key word is "pre-litigation": the company wants disputes settled before they reach court. State how much you recovered out of court and how many cases closed without a lawsuit, for example "XAF 38M recovered amicably, 8 out of 10 disputes settled without going to court".

Drafting or helping draft contracts

"Contract drafting" is on every resume. Give a volume and the counterparties: "150 client, supplier and public-partner contracts drafted or reviewed per year".

Drafting commercial leases

The OHADA Uniform Act on General Commercial Law uses the term "professional lease". Write both terms and add the scope: "professional leases for 12 branches drafted and renegotiated".

Ongoing legal monitoring

Legal monitoring is proven by what it produces. Name the format, the frequency and the audience: "monthly legal update for senior management: finance act, Labour Code, OHADA".

Preparing legal documents

Name them: articles of association, general meeting minutes, filings with the trade and companies register (RCCM). Say for how many companies you prepared them.

Tailoring this template to your application

  1. Underline the duties and requirements in the posting: pre-litigation, contracts, leases, legal monitoring, legal documents, the degree and the years of experience.
  2. For each underlined item, find a real achievement and a number: an amount in XAF, a count of contracts, cases or companies.
  3. Under your name, write your job and your years, for example "Corporate Legal Counsel · 7 years · OHADA business law", rather than "Master's degree holder".
  4. Replace the template's experience lines with yours, keeping the shape: a verb or a number first, then the context.
  5. Keep the left column short: education, specific legal skills (OHADA law, tax, employment law) and languages.
  6. Read it out loud: every line should answer a sentence in the posting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this resume template free?

Yes. The PDF and Word files on this page are free to download.

Can applicant tracking systems read this resume?

This template uses a header band and two columns, which read clearly for a recruiter. Some applicant tracking systems struggle with columns. If you apply through an online platform that scans resumes, pick a single-column template and keep the same lines.

I have less than five years of experience. Can I use this template?

Yes. Highlight your internships at a law firm or in a company, your thesis if it covers the same field, and put numbers on what you did: cases followed, contracts reviewed, formal notices drafted. Don't inflate your years: the posting asks for specific experience and the recruiter will check it.

I'm a lawyer or I come from a law firm. How do I present that background?

Translate your cases into business terms: amounts recovered, disputes avoided, risks flagged in time. A company wants someone who solves the problem before the lawsuit, not only someone who argues in court.

Should I add a photo?

This template doesn't include one. If the posting asks for a photo, add it; otherwise a resume without a photo is perfectly acceptable for a legal role.

Does this template work for other legal roles?

Yes: employment law counsel, tax counsel, head of legal or legal assistant. Keep the structure and replace the lines with ones that answer the words in your own posting.
